PLANT

Function of plants  :

  • Primary source of food for people and animals
  • Produce oxygen
  • Help to keep us cool
  • Renew the air
  • Provide a home for wildlife
  • Beauty surroundings
  • Perfume the air
  • Furnish buildinh materials and fuel
Part of a plant  :
  • Roots
  • Shoots
ROOTS
  • Not comprised of several organs like the shoot
  • Made from many routs which spread out from under to shoot
Function :
  • Holds the plant in the ground
  • Prevents from being blown away or blown over in a strong wind
  • Takes up water and mineral from the soil to help the plant make food and grow
3 Kind of Root System
  • Tap Root System {example : carrots, potatoes, radish, parsley}
  • Fibrous Root System {example : grass, lemon grass, clover, bamboo, ferns, coconut palm}
  • Adventitious Roots {example : corn, orchid, coconut, mangrove tree}
Tap Root System
  • has a thick central root
  • grows deep into the soil
  • has small lateral routs growing from it
Example : carrots, potatoes, radish, parsley

Tap Root Shapes
  1. Conical shape, example : carrot

carrot is an example of conical tap root shape.

   2.   Fusifrom shape, example : radish

radish is an example of fusiform tap root shape.

3.    Napiform shape, example : potato

Potato is an example of napiform tap root shape.

SHOOT
  • Grows above the ground
  • Comprises several organs
  • Stem and its branches
  • Major plants of the shoot ; ferminal bud, lateral bud, internode, node
  1. Terminal bud - tip of the shoot
  2. Lateral bud - sides of the shoot
  3. Node : region where the leaf and bud is found
  4. Internode : gap between two nodes
LEAVES
  • The food factory of the plant
  • Produce the food used by the plant or stored for later use

Function  :
  • helps to draw water through the plant from the roots
  • makes food using the process of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis : process of converting light energy to chemical energy / process by which green plants make use of carbon dioxide and water to manufacture food in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll.

STEM

Function  :

  • transport water and mineral from roots to the leaf
  • movement of water and mineral from the roots upward and movement of manufactured food
  • used for food storage & reproduction of plants involving cuttings
  • green stems manufacture food just as leaves do
FLOWERS
  • Contains the reproductive parts of the plant
  • Differ in shape, size and color
